Chapter 19 Now it came to pass, when Jesus had finished these sayings, he departed from Galilee, and he came to the coast of Judea (Mat 19:1); A. Addressed Christ as Good Master. Knelt before Christ. Sought way of eternal life through goodness. B. Addressed Christ falsely. He failed to recognize divinity of Christ. "Why callest thou me good...none good but one." Christ of Himself said "I am Good Shepherd." Rebuked for calling Christ good without realizing divinity was its source. C. Teaches of vanity of seeking goodness apart from God. (Rom. 7) "I know that in me dwelleth no good thing." Yet people constantly try. II. LAW OF GOD IS RULE OF GOODNESS. A. Expressed in "keep the commandments." B. Which? All important, violate one - violate all. C. "All these have I kept from my youth." Kept in wrong Spirit . "What lack I yet?" To much boasting which is excluded in justification by faith. D. Christ discovered to him covetousness of heart. He had much disobedience, free from gross outward sins yet come short. III. CHRIST IS WAY OF GOODNESS. A. He promises eternal life. "Thou shalt have treasure in heaven." B. It cost us absolute submission. "Sell all." C. Those who refuse submission accept sorrow. "THE YOUNG RULER" I. WHAT HE HAD. A. "He was very rich." It is a common fallacy to think that money would solve all my problems. a. "A man's life consisteth not in the abundance." b. "For the love of money is the root of all evil." 2. Wealth can be a blessing or a curse. a. Some are blessed with money while others are cursed with money. b. Closest thing to omnipotence that we can possess. Also closest thing to impotence. c. It depends on whether it masters me or I master it. B. He was a ruler. He had attained to authority and power. C. He was young. So many do not achieve to wealth or power until they are too old to really enjoy it. D. He was moral. When Jesus flashed on him the second table of law, our relationship to others. a. "All these have I kept from my youth up." b. Not an empty boast. E. He had a gracious temperament. His courteous address, "Good Master." His kneeling before Jesus. F. Jesus looked at him and loved him. Those eyes that could pierce inside of a man. II. WHAT HE SOUGHT, ETERNAL LIFE. A. More than just a quantity or duration. A quality of life. Age abiding life. The life of God. Look at the quality of life around you. a. So much of it is so shallow, a sham. B. With all be possessed, he was conscious that there was something more. He said, "What lack I yet?" There is a void in man that only God can fill. a. Purchased learning toys for grandchildren. Certain shape block to go in right slot - star, triangle, circle, square. How frustrated they would get because the star would not fit into the square. How frustrated I would get. b. How must God feel when he watches our futile efforts to fill the void in our lives. III. WHAT HE LACKED, "ONE THING THOU LACKEST." A. Poverty? No you are reading superficially. B. "Why callest thou Me good?" There is one good, that is God. 1. What are Jews saying? a. I am no good - or. b. I am God. c. What you have seen in me and recognized is: God. C. If you would be complete, come and follow Me. No man is complete without God, follow Me. You need God at the center of your life, follow Me. D. What about this selling all trip, and giving to the poor? This is incidental, Jesus just put the finger on what was keeping this young man from following Him. It may or may not be riches in your life. The Lord will put the finger on whatever it is. What holds you back today? E. What happened to him? Next week we'll continue in the next three chapters of Matthew's gospel. Shall we pray? Father, again we thank you for your Word. Truly it is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. May we walk in its light, be obedient unto its truth that we, Lord, would not seek to mold and shape your Word to our concepts but that we would have our concepts molded and shaped by Your Word. Help us, Father, that we might bend out necks to the authority of your truth rather than trying to bend the truth to fit our lose lifestyles. Jesus, let thy Word penetrate our hearts and give us O God a spirit of obedience and a spirit of forgiveness. In Jesus' name we pray.
